doesn’t help anyone.

You already know how to use it.

Take a screenshot like you always do.
ScreenNamer pops up, you give it a name, and press Return.

Screenshot

Any macOS screenshot shortcut you already use.

Name

ScreenNamer pops up ready for a name.

Return

Press Return. It’s renamed and ScreenNamer gets out of the way.

That’s it. Keep using the shortcuts you already know. ScreenNamer handles the rest.

One job. Done carefully.

Small details that keep ScreenNamer fast, predictable, and out of your way.

Remembers your names

Type a few letters and previous names appear, with the best match first. Nothing changes until you press Return.

Save it where it belongs

Choose a folder as you name your screenshot. ScreenNamer remembers your selection, so the next one goes there too.

Keeps up

Take as many screenshots as you need. They queue behind one panel instead of stacking windows. Name them one at a time.

Easy batch naming

Give multiple screenshots the same name and ScreenNamer numbers them automatically. File extensions stay untouched.

Copy it or trash it

Copy a screenshot to your clipboard or trash it without leaving ScreenNamer. Trashed screenshots stay recoverable until you empty the Trash.

Hide it for later

Not ready to name it? Hide the panel and come back when you are.

Keyboard first

Use Tab or the arrow keys to move through suggestions. Return selects one; press Return again to save.

Your folder, nothing else

ScreenNamer only accesses your chosen screenshot folder and its subfolders.

Questions

Does it change my screenshot shortcuts?

No. ⇧⌘3, ⇧⌘4 and ⇧⌘5 keep working exactly as they do now. ScreenNamer watches the folder macOS saves to and reacts after the fact. It never intercepts the capture itself.

Can I save screenshots into folders?

Yes. The rename panel has a Save To picker above the name. Choose any folder inside the folder ScreenNamer watches — however deep it goes — and your screenshot is filed there when you save. If the folder doesn’t exist yet, name one from the same menu. It is only created when you save, so changing your mind leaves nothing behind.

ScreenNamer stays on the folder you picked, so a run of screenshots that belong together takes one trip to the menu instead of ten. Choose your main folder again to stop filing, and it always starts there when you open the app.

The list is read from the folder itself every time the panel opens, so a folder you made in Finder a minute ago is already there — and nothing about where you file your screenshots is stored anywhere.

This is about where screenshots go, not where ScreenNamer looks: it still watches one folder, and only files that land directly in it. Needs ScreenNamer 1.1 or later.

Why does the panel sometimes take a few seconds to appear?

That is macOS, not ScreenNamer. While the floating thumbnail is showing in the corner of your screen, macOS waits about five seconds before writing the file to disk, so nothing can see it until then. Press ⇧⌘5, click Options, and turn off Show Floating Thumbnail, and screenshots save instantly. ScreenNamer mentions this the first time you open it.

I took a screenshot and nothing happened.

Almost always, the two folders don’t match. ScreenNamer is watching one folder while macOS is saving to another, so nothing ever arrives for it to rename.

Check them against each other. In ScreenNamer, open Settings and read the path under Folder to watch. Then press ⇧⌘5, click Options, and see which folder is ticked under Save to. Those two need to be the same folder. If the one you want isn’t in the list, choose Other Location… and pick it there.

Those are Step 1 and Step 2 of the Setup Guide, in the ScreenNamer menu. It ends with a test screenshot, so you can watch the two line up before you close it.

Check for a folder inside the folder. ScreenNamer only watches files that land directly in the folder you chose, not in folders inside it. If macOS is saving to Desktop/screenshots while ScreenNamer is watching Desktop, nothing will ever reach it. Point ScreenNamer at the exact folder your screenshots appear in. (Saving into a folder is a separate thing, and it does work — see Can I save screenshots into folders? above.)

Try turning off Only rename screenshots. In Settings. That switch asks macOS whether it took the picture, and the answer can go missing — most often when the folder you are watching syncs to iCloud, which does not always carry that marking across. With the switch off, ScreenNamer offers to name any new image that lands in the folder. If that fixes it for you, please let me know: it helps me fix the underlying problem.

If ScreenNamer was working and then stopped responding, update to the latest version from the App Store, which fixes this. Until you do, restarting your Mac will get it going again.

Will it rename other images I save to that folder?

No. ScreenNamer only reacts to files macOS captured itself. Export a PNG from another app into the same folder, or drag one in, and it stays exactly as you left it, under the name you gave it.

macOS marks its own captures with a piece of file metadata, and that is what ScreenNamer looks for. The mark belongs to the file rather than its name, so a screenshot you renamed months ago still counts as one.

If you’d rather be prompted for everything that lands in the folder, open Settings and turn off Only rename screenshots. That is also the setting to try if your screenshots are being ignored: the mark can go missing when a folder syncs to iCloud, and without it ScreenNamer cannot tell a capture from any other image.

Does it use AI?

No. And that’s intentional.

ScreenNamer remembers names you’ve used before. Nothing is analyzed, uploaded, or generated. You name your screenshots. ScreenNamer just makes it fast.

Which Macs does it work on?

macOS 14 Sonoma or later, on Apple silicon and Intel.

For technical issues, please include your macOS version, ScreenNamer version, and a brief description of what happened and what you expected instead. You can find your ScreenNamer version under About ScreenNamer in the menu bar.

If ScreenNamer is not responding to new screenshots, first confirm that the folder ScreenNamer is watching matches the folder macOS uses to save screenshots. This is the most common setup issue and is covered in the FAQ above.
